Let the Planning Begin

Christmas is over, the New Year is almost upon us. This could mean a lot of things, but what arrived in the  mail yesterday says it all.

The Burpee's Seed catalog! Oh joy!

Make no mistake, I love winter. I am a child born on one the coldest days of the year. This is not my cry for spring (or help as you might think). In fact, the current South Dakota winter is completely letting me down. Where is the snow and the cold? I'm not built for 50-degree Decembers.

But I couldn't help but get a little excited when I pulled it out of the mailbox. Planning a garden is a lot like planning a vacation. All the ideas you can toy with, the new flavors you can ponder, the new cultures you get to contemplate, oh the joys! And all without any commitment.

Until you buy of course.

And I'm always looking for suggestions. So...this is where you guys come in! Last year my new vegetable to try was kale. I'd never had it, never even contemplated eating it but at the last minute thought, what the heck, I hear lots of people talk about so I might as well give it a shot.

And I LOVED it! Ah-Maz-Ing!!! I only planted 6 plants so making things like Kale chips was a little challenging but we found lots of yummy recipes to experiment with. You can bet I'll be planting a whole lot more this year. Of course I do the usual carrots, kohlrabi, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers gig but I'm looking for new awesome vegetables to add to my repertoire.

What would you guys suggest I try planting this spring? What do you really love? Let me know cuz it's shopping time!

Happy Garden Dreaming!

Holy, Technical Difficulties

Hey guys! I'm back. Kind of. Notice something different about the blog? I thought you might, since you're all observant like that! ;)

Over the weekend my little brother brought up the idea of web-hosting from a company that was wind power. The Cutie Boy and I thought this was a brilliant idea and decided to switch our web hosting from GoDaddy to Fat Cow. Not that GoDaddy has been bad, we just wanted to support a business that isn't entirely powered by coal, gas or oil. I mean, don't we all consume enough of that on a daily basis? Why not try and cut back a little bit. Yes, I know that it takes oil and gas and coal and other mined resources to make the batteries and wind turbines and the like but I'm hoping they have a lesser impact in the long run.

So, to make a long story short, when we tried to transfer the existing Tomboy Tales over, there were some major technical glitches (I make no claims to being a tech genius) and everything was lost. Yep, all the archives. A few years worth of blogging. Ouch. But I'm still here. Over the next few weeks you can expect some more changes and we keep working to get the site going at full speed. But until then I'm still here, sharing a few crazy tales with you!
